User Experience Lead (Princeton, NJ)

Within ZS' Business Technology group, the User Experience Expertise Center (UXEC) works with clients to design effective technology solutions that support & enhance critical business processes and manage the implementation of those solutions. The User Experience (UX) team, specifically, spearheads a variety of user experience engagements from large scale business transformation and customer experience initiatives to interactive dashboards, web portals, and applications for mobile and desktop.

USER EXPERIENCE LEAD

As a User Experience Lead, you will drive initiatives that make ZS solutions useful, usable and desirable for people, while also meeting the business needs of our clients. We seek someone who is passionate about leveraging user-centered research and design methods to solve complex business problems and deliver a best-in-class user experience.

This role works across various lifecycle stages, from initial definition to continuous enhancement, as we integrate user-centered design into the work of multi-disciplinary teams and a broad range of client and engagements. You will provide expertise and direction in guiding UX strategy, research, and design, including hands-on support for client and internal projects. You will create, execute, and synthesize various types of user research studies to discover user needs. You will also leverage user research findings, combined with knowledge of UX best practices and client needs, to develop design recommendations and solutions for clients, including navigation and interaction strategies for various dashboards, data visualizations, enterprise applications and information systems. As a senior member of the team, you will provide thought leadership in our UX consulting practice and be an integral part of guiding our team of skilled UX Researchers and Designers.

Responsibilities:

Your expertise will enable us to provide UX strategy, research and design services to our clients, stakeholders and internal teams. We expect depth of experience in a wide range of UX methods and approaches. As a senior member of the team, you will:

Foster a user-centered, collaborative design process

  • Partner and collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including other members of the UX team, throughout all stages of the user-centered design process
  • Define, socialize and implement best practices for user experience design, leveraging industry standards
  • Apply strategic thinking and demonstrate awareness of business goals while striving for a highly usable and engaging end-to-end user experience 

Lead business development

  • Establish strong relationships with project teams and clients to generate business
  • Develop an appropriate understanding of business context and client goals
  • Cultivate new UX opportunities in collaboration with ZS account teams
  • Support business development through the writing of proposals, collateral, and development staffing / pricing approach

Manage project outcomes at all levels, from client / stakeholder expectations, to timeline and financials

  • Plan and execute user research
  • Plan and execute qualitative and quantitative user research studies, analyze and package findings, share with the team, and translate into specific design outcomes. User research may include ethnographic studies, user interviews, usability testing, card-sorting, heuristic reviews, etc. 
  • Analyze, prepare, and communicate research findings for executive reports and presentations to clients, project teams and colleagues as appropriate
  • Produce perceptive and compelling deliverables that effectively communicate user research insights to inform strategy and design recommendations
  • Ensure that both client and project teams internalize findings through engaging, well facilitated workshops (or other techniques)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle, including documentation of user types (personas), scenarios, tasks, conceptual models and process flows

Lead best-in-class UX design

  • Support UX strategic goals by creating designs that support user needs, meet business goals and are technically feasible
  • Produce standardized, best-in-class UX deliverables including information graphics to elucidate user research insights, navigation and user interfaces with sitemaps, paper prototypes or wireframes, screen mock ups, behavioral specifications, style guidelines and icons as needed
  • Ensure all UI definition and development is consistent with usability standards, best practices, and strategy
  • Strive for optimal usability and user engagement for the end-to-end experience by leveraging industry standards

Contribute to development and dissemination of UX expertise both inside and outside ZS

  • Teach and mentor junior team members about UX research and design best practices and industry standards
  • Nurture a design thinking culture within and beyond the Business Technology / Software Development practice area at ZS
  • Inform and shape the growth of a best-in-class UX practice that is recognized inside and outside of the firm

Qualifications:

ZS welcomes candidates who hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a visual design field, including graphic design, interaction design, illustration, industrial design or comparable design discipline, and have a foundational understanding of usability design best practices; additional degrees or certifications in human-computer interaction, information science, Human Factors (CUA™) or related field, or equivalent work experience is preferred. We are looking for individuals with 8-10 years of experience in the field of User Experience, with a focus on leading the design and delivery of business or enterprise applications that are complex, high-volume, and high profile, including portals, business applications, mobile apps, interactive dashboards, data visualization and information design.

The most critical qualifications for us include:

Business Knowledge and Acumen:

  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex business processes and how they manifest in enterprise software to support end-users;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical teams to produce feasible solutions in support of Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, and Analytics teams.
  • Strongly developed business acumen and the ability to deeply and quickly understand varying business needs holistically;
  • The ability to delegate and manage project work across the team, as appropriate.
  • A functional understanding of enterprise software is required, including portals, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, content management systems, collaboration technologies, and Business Intelligence (BI) systems.
  • Previous experience working in pharmaceutical industry and knowledge of healthcare is preferred.

User Experience:

  • A strong portfolio featuring design work for enterprise, that showcases information architecture, interaction design, information design, visual design and mobile design skills and how the designs lead to positive business outcomes;
  • Expertise using design tools like Adobe Creative Suite (especially Adobe Illustrator), Axure, etc.;
  • Solid understanding of user-centered design principles, careful attention to detail and the ability to grasp complex, nuanced product requirements, and lead design discussions on these topics;
  • Solid understanding of basic user research techniques such as contextual inquiry, user interviews, usability testing, card sorting and/or related techniques.
  • The ability to collaborate with user researchers, and lead the incorporation of insights from user research into the user interface design process;
  • Experience designing for mobile applications with a focus on delivering engaging user experiences;
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams, including UX, business (eg. Marketing, Sales), product management and technology/IT/engineering);
  • A functional understanding of modern code, like HTML 5, JavaScript and CSS, and how digital business properties can leverage it, when possible, to provide a rich, consumer-grade user experience

Project Management:

  • Expertise in UX technology project and program management, including scope definition, deadlines and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to develop and ensure execution of an overall team- and/or project-level plan for UX research and design, including scoping, costing, planning and facilitation
  • Ability to cultivate and standardize UX processes at ZS across teams/projects, while at the same time educating stakeholders on best-practice approaches and their relevance to stated objectives.

Client Management and Communication:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to clearly articulate design decisions with stakeholders and development teams, and keep UX and Project Team leads up-to-date;
  • Excellent collaboration skills with all levels of clients and ZS project team members, with experience leading design discussions and obtaining consensus on project requirements that produce deliverables that adhere to usability best practices and fulfill business needs;
  • Demonstrated experience in technology project and program management, including scope definition, deadlines and stakeholder management.
  • Can package complex information in compelling, meaningful ways that are easy to understand; structures communication in an effective, logical and top-down manner; can confidently and clearly present recommendations while gauging audience understanding
  • Ability to handle unexpected changes and issues with poise.
