User Experience Research Lead/Software Development Team (Evanston, IL)

ZS seeks a User Experience Research Lead to join our Evanston-based Software Development (SD) team. The SD team at ZS is a diverse, collaborative and smart group with offices in India and the United States. The UX team within this group conducts user-centered strategy, research and design in support of ZS' software products and productized assets. In this team you will have an immediate impact on the full lifecycle of our solutions as we bring a user-centered design approach to software development, configuration, and ongoing administration of our clients' business processes.

As a User Experience Research Lead, you will drive initiatives that make ZS solutions useful, usable and desirable for people, while also meeting the business needs of our clients. We seek someone who is passionate about leveraging user-centered research and design methods to solve complex business problems and deliver a best-in-class user experience. This role works across various lifecycle stages, from initial definition to continuous enhancement, as we integrate user-centered design into the development of our software products and assets. You will provide deep expertise and direction in helping us establish a user experience research function across our portfolio of products, including qualitative and quantitative approaches. You will create, execute, and synthesize various types of user research studies to discover user needs. You will establish repeatable ways of assessing and measuring user satisfaction with our products, and recommend specific metrics to track for our various products. As a senior member of the team, you will provide internal UX thought leadership and be an integral part of guiding our team of skilled UX Researchers.


Business Knowledge and Acumen

  • Ability to understand complex business processes and how they manifest in enterprise software to support end-users
  • Functional understanding of enterprise software is required, including portals, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, content management systems, collaboration technologies, and Business Intelligence (BI) systems
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical teams to produce feasible solutions in support of Sales, Marketing, Human Resources, Finance, and Analytics teams
  • Strongly developed business acumen and the ability to deeply and quickly understand varying business needs holistically
  • Previous experience working in pharmaceutical industry and knowledge of healthcare is preferred

User Experience

  • Expert in applying human factors engineering and ergonomics to optimize user interfaces in digital tools
  • Robust and diverse portfolio featuring user-centered design studies that lead to positive business outcomes
  • The ability to understand and recommend analytics related to customer usage of products to help track progress and improvement over time
  • Fluency with user-centered design (UCD) process and user research techniques such as ethnographic studies, user interviews and usability testing, with the ability to clearly articulate various research methods to clients; the demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate a research study end to end is required
  • The ability to incorporate insights from research studies into synthesized findings in a manner that is easily understood by clients and ZS project team members
  • Demonstrated aptitude for user research report writing (we will request a formal writing sample)

Project Management

  • Expertise in UX technology project and program management, including scope definition, deadlines and stakeholder management
  • Ability to develop and ensure execution of an overall team- and/or project-level plan for UX research and design, including scoping, costing, planning and facilitation
  • Ability to cultivate and standardize UX processes at ZS across teams/projects, while at the same time educating stakeholders on best-practice approaches and their relevance to stated objectives

Stakeholder Management and Communication

  • Demonstrated experience in technology project and program management, including scope definition, deadlines and stakeholder management
  • Excellent collaboration skills, with experience guiding design decisions and obtaining consensus on project requirements and deliverables, with all levels of ZS project team members
  • Strong written and oral communication skills


ZS welcomes candidates who hold a Masters or PhD degree in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, the social sciences (Anthropology, Psychology, Cognitive Psychology), or a related field. We are looking for individuals with  8-10 years of experience in the field of User Experience, with a focus on enabling and delivering complex, high-volume, high profile business applications, portals, mobile applications, interactive dashboards, data visualizations.

Candidates should have the ability to travel to client locations (25%) to work with teams and provide in-person expertise. Candidates must possess permanent work authorization for their intended country of employment.
